‘Do no harm’: The Light Yard’s commitment to sustainability

Here at The Light Yard, we are committed to maintaining the highest possible standards for sustainability, by choosing materials with remarkable eco-credentials and ensuring our manufacturing and shipping practices leave a low-carbon footprint.

At first glance, the handcrafted lights available on our website may seem to be simply stunning lighting, but there is so much more than meets the eye. While we are busy creating eye-catching designs and high-specification lighting schemes for discerning customers, sustainability is never far from our minds. Behind each of our offerings, you’ll find a story of craftsmanship, of prototype and design, and of care and deliberation into each material we use.

The ECO Classic

We only work with artisan lighting designers and crafters who take great pride in using sustainable materials. In fact, it’s a key factor when we choose to collaborate with a designer.

For each of our collections, our eco-credentials vary slightly, but they all share the same traits: sustainable woods such as poplar and bamboo; energy-efficient, long-lasting lightbulbs that minimise waste; and low-carbon shipping methods.

We know sustainability is important to our customers and it is, quite simply, the right thing to do. As such, we are serious about our commitment to do no harm to the natural environment. Read on for a few examples from our collections…

The Alchemist collection

Our range of exceptional pendant and wall lights are designed to showcase Edison-style filament LED bulbs, which are both striking and energy-efficient. You’ll get all the glamour of an incandescent-style bulb, but without the wasted energy and high costs.

Each product in the Alchemist collection is made to order from the company’s Derbyshire workshop. Since the products in this collection, as well as those in the GCD and Storm collections, are handcrafted in Britain, our shipping methods and packaging, which uses recyclable materials wherever possible, help to minimise our carbon footprint and reduce landfill surplus.

The Storm collection

The lamps and lamp shades now available in our Storm collection are more than just beautiful. Manufactured from fast-growing trees like poplar, the exterior veneers used in the Storm collection are FSC-approved and highly sustainable. The FSC, a body which helps take care of forests and the people and wildlife who call them home, has been recognised by WWF as the “hallmark of responsible forest management”. With a growing market for FSC-approved materials, it’s clear that manufacturers and consumers are growing increasingly savvy about choosing responsibly sourced timber and wood products. Each of the show-stopping veneered lamp shades in the Storm collection uses an eco-friendly, water-based finish to seal the shades in a satin protective coating. This makes them strong, easy-to-clean and affords them greater longevity. In other words, they will keep their colour and their beauty for years to come.

Watch this space

As a company, we are always looking for ways to improve our eco-credentials. For example, in our outdoor lighting range, we are developing a series around MOSO bamboo, which will allow us to phase out the use of Iroko solid hardwood for the more sustainable option.

Bamboo grows faster than any other plant in the world, yet it has hardwood-like properties. The process by which the bamboo is cultivated and produced is strictly safeguarded to ensure its eco-credentials are never compromised.
We are using MOSO bamboo to embrace a movement toward the use of fast-growing, sustainable woods and natural organic materials in exterior lighting for residential and commercial projects. In 2018, we will be introducing these new products to our ranges while we continue the process of assessment, looking to improve on the methods we already have in place.

It’s all part of the commitment we’ve made to do what’s right by the natural environment. So, relax and enjoy your new lighting, which is as responsible as it is beautiful.
